A distribution manager in Tucker called us in late June about a certified forklift requisition that had been sitting for twenty-two days. He'd posted $15.50 an hour. Three weeks, five applicants, none of them cleared the background check. We pulled his active posting and looked at what was open within five miles. The Home Depot distribution center just off I-20 in Stonecrest was listing forklift associates at $17 to $18. He wasn't posting below market in the abstract. He was posting below the first result his candidates saw when they searched forklift jobs in that part of DeKalb.
DeKalb County's unemployment rate was 3.4% in March 2026, with 392,978 residents employed out of a labor force of 406,983, per the Georgia Department of Labor. The county's I-20 and I-285 corridors anchor one of metro Atlanta's densest logistics clusters, with Amazon, Home Depot, and FedEx all operating large facilities within county lines. Warehouse associate wages run $17 to $20 per hour for general roles; certified forklift operators at most facilities land between $16 and $22 depending on equipment class and employer.
DeKalb County by the Numbers, Mid-2026
The Georgia Department of Labor's March 2026 county data puts DeKalb's unemployment rate at 3.4%, with 392,978 residents employed out of a labor force of 406,983. Georgia's statewide rate ran at 3.3% in the same month, so DeKalb sits a tenth of a point above the state average. That's actually an improvement from prior years when the gap was wider. The county's labor force is more absorbed than it used to be.
DeKalb is Georgia's fourth-largest county, with an estimated 2026 population of 776,204. It's not growing at Cherokee or Forsyth speeds, but it's far denser. That density is exactly what draws large distribution operations to the county, and it's also why DeKalb reported the largest over-the-year wage gain of any large Georgia county in early 2026: 6.4 percent, according to data cited by MetroAtlanta.Jobs. Wages here have moved faster than in most of the surrounding metro.
The county's employment mix shapes what warehouse employers are actually competing against. Professional and technical services employ 48,681 county residents. Healthcare and social assistance accounts for 47,331. Retail trade runs at 40,319. Add the county's substantial federal presence (the CDC's main campus, the VA Medical Center, multiple Emory-affiliated facilities) and you have a workforce where a large share of residents have employment options well above general warehouse pay. Decide DeKalb counts 545 manufacturers in the county employing roughly 12,500 workers. That's meaningful, but manufacturing and distribution aren't the dominant employment story here the way they are in Hall County or Bartow County.
Where Production Wages Stand
DeKalb is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell MSA for Bureau of Labor Statistics wage reporting. Workers across all occupations in that metro averaged $34.57 per hour in May 2025 per the BLS; transportation and material moving roles averaged $28.64 per hour. That material-moving figure is pulled up by truck drivers and logistics specialists, but it signals the general wage environment production-adjacent workers are operating in when they evaluate a warehouse posting.

The Home Depot DC figure surprises people. For a 615,000-square-foot facility on I-20, their posted average is lower than many smaller employers in the corridor assume the big players are paying. That doesn't mean smaller distributors have an easy time competing. Home Depot's brand recognition and benefits package draw applicants at a rate that a regional 3PL posting the same hourly won't. If you're a regional distributor near Stonecrest at $16 and your applications look thin, it's not necessarily that DeKalb's market is broken. Your candidates are comparing your listing against Amazon's first and moving on.

The I-20/I-285 Distribution Corridor
DeKalb's position at the junction of I-20 and I-285 made it a natural home for Atlanta-area distribution infrastructure. I-20 runs west toward Birmingham and east toward Columbia, South Carolina. I-285 connects every major spoke in the metro network. Hartsfield-Jackson is about twenty-five miles southwest, close enough for air cargo operations, far enough to avoid the Fulton County labor cost premium.
Amazon's Stone Mountain facility covers 700,000 square feet, employs approximately 1,000 workers, and uses robotics technology in the picking operation. It's the most visible anchor of the eastern DeKalb logistics cluster. Home Depot's flatbed delivery center at 2182 Coffee Road in Stonecrest opened in 2021, covers 615,000 square feet, and serves as the distribution point for large and oversized orders across metro Atlanta. FedEx Trade Networks runs dedicated warehousing and customs brokerage operations in the county. UNIS maintains warehousing and logistics capacity in Stonecrest as well.
What this means for staffing: these facilities are all hiring most of the year. Amazon's 1,000-worker operation runs ongoing hourly hiring, as any facility of that scale does. Home Depot and FedEx have similar continuous cycles. The result is a logistics corridor where several large employers with recognized brand names are competing for the same certified and experienced warehouse workers in overlapping zip codes. Smaller and mid-size distributors in the same area aren't hiding from that competition. They're running their requisitions alongside it.
The Georgia DOL's June 2026 county workforce plan identifies transportation and warehousing as one of DeKalb's defined growth sectors. That framing is accurate, and it understates how much of that growth is already here and actively absorbing the available production labor pool.
Which Roles Are Getting Harder to Fill
Certified forklift operators are the most consistent pressure point, for the same structural reasons that apply across Georgia. In DeKalb, the local version runs directly through the logistics corridor: Amazon, Home Depot, and FedEx all use certified operators routinely and maintain active open positions for most of the year. A certified operator searching for work in Stonecrest or Stone Mountain sees those employers first. A smaller distributor posting $15.50 for the same credential isn't hidden from those candidates. It just looks like a worse deal.
Healthcare support is the second pressure point. Emory Healthcare, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, the VA Medical Center, and multiple Emory-affiliated clinical facilities all draw from the same hourly labor pool that distribution employers need. We had a client in Decatur earlier this year who lost two picking candidates on the same week to housekeeping roles at Emory. Not on pay. On schedule. The candidates preferred the predictability of a clinical shift over the variability of a production floor. That's not a sourcing failure. It's a structural feature of DeKalb's market, and it shows up more often in the eastern county zip codes near the Emory presence.
General warehouse roles at smaller employers are filling more slowly than in 2024. Indeed showed roughly 2,790 active warehouse and fulfillment listings in DeKalb County at one point in mid-2026. With 14,005 unemployed residents countywide, most of whom aren't production-ready or immediately available, the candidate-to-opening ratio is tighter than the raw numbers suggest.
What DeKalb County Employers Can Do Now
Start with your posted rate. Pull each open warehouse and distribution role and compare it against the ranges in the table above. If you're posting general warehouse associates at $15 or $16 near Stonecrest or Stone Mountain, you're below the effective floor in that corridor. We used to advise I-20 corridor clients to treat $16 as a workable floor for general associates. We don't say that anymore. The Home Depot DC reference point and Amazon's active hiring have moved candidate expectations, and postings that haven't moved with them sit longer than they used to.
For certified forklift operators, plan your requisition six to eight weeks ahead of your need date if your facility is competing against Amazon and Home Depot in the same zip codes. These roles fill in eight to fifteen days when the rate clears the market. Three to four weeks when it doesn't, and that assumes you're within a dollar of where you need to be.
Referral sourcing tends to outperform broad job board posting in the Stonecrest and Lithonia corridor, where the production workforce is networked through community ties that don't always show up on a LinkedIn profile. A referral bonus of $200 to $300 on a certified associate hire has filled roles for our clients that had been running on Indeed for four weeks with no qualified applicants. It's worth running that channel in parallel with job board postings, not after they fail.
